http://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us/education/interactive/peaceriver/The Peace River watershed encompasses over 2300 square miles spanning all or part of eight counties: Hillsborough, Polk, Hardee, DeSoto, Charlotte, Highlands, Sarasota, and Manatee. Although its headwaters lie in the Green Swamp, the river, through man-made systems, officially begins at Lake Hancock. It runs south and southwest for over 100 miles to Charlotte Harbor, and its major tributary is Horse Creek. The watershed is home to a great deal of wildlife, including endangered and protected species like the scrub jay, sandhill crane, little blue heron, indigo snake, Florida panther, gopher tortoises, and gopher frogs.
